My teaching career has been geared toward the empowerment of young minds. My passion is to help students blossom into well-rounded, responsible and successful individuals. Throughout the course of my career, I have had wonderful opportunities to teach diverse groups of students; including English language learners, those with learning disabilities, those who performed at grade level, and those who were gifted /exceptional. As a result, I have become proficient in evaluating and designing creative/ stimulating lesson plans that accommodate multiple intelligences, bring a “hands on” approach to learning, and keep students interested and focused. My classroom experience has helped me understand that successful school principals are those who know how to evaluate instruction and provide strong feedback that encourages his/her team to teach effectively and students to learn more. A powerful leader engages his/her community (parents, teachers, students and administration) in school wide dialogues about what good teaching looks like and what can be done to improve student learning.
In my classroom I practice cultural awareness and make cultural connections on daily basis. My classroom brings together students of different language abilities and cultures. I make cultural connections in my classroom to help facilitate students learning and keep my students interested/motivated in the subject being taught. Cultural connections help me develop a safe learning environment in my classroom. Effective leaders understand the importance of differentiating curriculum. They know how to meet the needs of his/her diverse student population. They provide their students with opportunities to share their personal experiences, their culture, and the foundation of their persona with other students and other community members (teachers, administrators, parents). A good leader takes this outside the classroom and makes it happen in the community. He/she looks for powerful ways to connect his/her community together; pushing for positive change and building constituencies above culture differences. Applying culture to the curriculum facilitates the learning process of our students; its makes it’s personal and results in higher student interest.
My greatest strengths include inspiring and motivating students. I actively engage their minds by incorporating a variety of manipulatives, enjoyable activities and cooperative learning projects in the classroom. A good leader, like a good teacher knows what he/she needs to do to actively engage his team in the advancement of the school curriculum. He/she is able to articulate where he/she wants their educational system to go and what the plan is to get there. Understanding how to bring change about a school is a key leadership skill. To make it happen leaders must take risks. They must inspire their administration via ideas, concepts and theories that will pursue them to challenge themselves and their educational beliefs. Thus helping his/her coworkers become leaders within their core areas.
A student’s success in the classroom is not possible without the support of his/her parents. When parents become involve in their child’s education, the learning experience surpasses the established standards. Parents are key elements in education. They are the after school components that motivate our students to make the unreachable become reachable. For this, it is important to not only keep parents inform about their child’s academic progress, but also educate them on the opportunities of higher education and community development. The strongest leaders understand that most of his or her parents do not know how to help their children with their education; therefore they provide them with guidance and support via workshops and/or volunteering opportunities during school hours to teach them how to become positive role models and guide their children in the right direction.
-An exceptional leader is one who is a role model, strikes for change, takes risks and passes on the leadership torch to his/her community.
